This chapter has two major parts: the first part is about financial goals and the second is about information systems. The section on financial goals discusses mission statements and the objectives and purposes of financial statements. Two financial management goals are then explored: profit maximization and maximization of return on investment, neither of which is a commonly used goal. Some time is spent on the most commonly used goal, maximization of stockholder wealth. Secondary goals are then discussed, as is management by objectives (MBO). This section of the chapter also includes comments about other goals, such as social goals, and concludes with developing an action plan to achieve goals. The second section of the chapter covers information systems. The four levels of an information system are introduced: data production, data sorting, information production, and decision making. Most of this section concentrates on the last two of the four levels, since these are the keys for a company to establish an information system that will allow it to meet its financial goals. This chapter concludes with comments about the effectiveness of a management information system.

This ratio tells us that in Year 0003, for each $1.00 the stockholders have invested, the creditors have invested $2.18. In Year 0004 the comparable figures are stockholders $1.00 and creditors $1.83. The higher the creditors investment for each $1.00 of stockholders investment, the higher is the risk for the creditor. In such circumstances, if a hotel or food service operation wished to expand, debt financing would be more difficult to obtain and interest rates would be higher. The risk situation can perhaps be explained with some simple figures. Total assets equal total liabilities plus owners equity. Assume total assets are $100,000, total liabilities are $50,000, and owners equity $50,000. The debt to equity ratio will be Total liabilities $50,000 $50,000 Total equity 1 1 (or $1.00 of liabilities to $1.00 of equity)

They almost always increase dispersion, thereby increasing Type II errors and distorting correlations. Their inclusion in a data set makes the outcome of analysis unpredictable and not generalizable except to a population that happens to include the same sort of outlier. An outlier is a score that is far from the grand mean in ungrouped data or from the mean of its group in grouped data,

parental burden is evident, even in the controlled environment of the laboratory. The requirement for shared parental care is probably a very fundamental factor in the stability of the monogamous system in a wide range of species. Interestingly, the male Djungarian hamster takes his role to an unusual extreme, by dragging the emerging young from the birth canal of their mother he acts as her midwife. Similarly the environment and ecology of some species of deep-sea angler sh dictate that monogamy is essential for their reproductive success. Because they are sit-and-wait predators living in a vast, dark space the chances of males and females meeting are relatively small. Of course the chances of a member of either sex meeting more than one potential mate are even more remote, and so when a pair do meet they stay together quite literally. When he meets a female, the male angler sh gives up his independent lifestyle and attaches himself as a parasite to his mate taking nutrients directly from her blood. Mutually bene cial monogamy is, however, a relatively rare scenario and in many cases male animals need to employ physical mechanisms or behavioral strategies to ensure the success of the mating attempts that they are involved in, and the paternity of the young that they raise. One such strategy would be to prevent their mate from taking part in EPCs. For example, earlier in this chapter we saw that through a combination of gift-giving and frequent copulation male common terns can be con dent that the chicks that they raise are their own. But if EPCs are bene cial to females we would of course expect them to be just as creative in attempting to stray themselves if it helps them to secure the best possible genetic material for their young.

incorporates three states of leader behaviors: required (Box 4), preferred (Box 6), and actual (Box 5). It is envisaged that the situational characteristics (Box 1), composed mainly of the goals of the group, the type of task (e.g., individual versus team, closed versus open tasks), and the social and cultural context of the group, set the parameters for the required behavior. That is, these situational characteristics place some prescriptions on the kinds of behaviors the leader should engage in and also some proscriptions on the kinds of behaviors that should be eschewed. For example, the leader should be demanding and directing when coaching an elite team of adults (e.g., a university athletic team) but be gentle and soft when leading a youth sports team. Preferred behavior (Box 6) refers to the preferences of members for instruction and guidance, social support, and feedback. These preferences are largely a function of member characteristics (Box 3), including personality (e.g., need for achievement, need for affiliation, cognitive structure) and ability related to the task. It is acknowledged in the
